GSMA paper sets out interface for data exchange between mobile networks and the UAS ecosystem

The Aerial Connectivity Joint Activity group (ACJA) – a joint initiative by the Global Unmanned Traffic Management Association (GUTMA) and Groupe Speciale Mobile Association (GSMA) – has released a paper entitled The Interface for Data Exchange between MNOs and the UAS Ecosystem. The paper sets out the first steps in establishing clear and efficient communication between essential stakeholders in drone air traffic management. The paper models how the exchange of population density data and connectivity conditions along a flight path to fulfil its intent as a functional and operational extension of today’s interfaces.

The ACJA’s aim is to promote the exchange between the aviation and cellular communities, and to synchronise contributions between the existing Standard Development Organisations (SDOs) of each community in order to avoid incompatibilities between them. GSMA represents mobile operators. The ACJA’s aim is to promote the exchange between the aviation and cellular communities, and to synchronise contributions between the existing Standard Development Organisations (SDOs) of each community in order to avoid incompatibilities between them.

The trajectory to realise Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations at scale makes drones dependant on reliable connectivity and equally population density data. To ensure robust flight planning, clearing and ground risk considerations requires additional data exchanges from communication providers.

Since the initial release of Network Coverage Service Definition, further learnings and developments have elicited new users for mobile network operators (MNO), surpassing the data capabilities beyond the traditional “connectivity coverage” use case. The essence of MNO technologies makes the prime source for valuable population density data to supplement ground risk assessments.
