Germany lowers hurdles for issuing generic operation licenses

Germany’s Federal Aviation Office (LBA) has streamlined the process for issuing an operating license for drone operations in the Specific Category. Companies based in the LBA’s area of responsibility may commence their UAS operations at new locations after receiving a generic operating license, without having to first apply for an individual license for the specific area of operation.

The Association for Unmanned Aviation, UAV DACH, says the change is due largely to the excellent safety record in the “affected” risk class up to SAIL II.

UAV DACH said the previous method entailed “enormous bureaucratic effort”. “Even if the same mission is always flown, the corresponding permits have generally been issued on a location-specific basis. The result: a ton of paperwork and time-consuming administrative burdens for UAS operators and licensing authorities.”

UAV DACH welcomes the LBA’s approach and said it is happy to accompany and support other licensing authorities in Europe on this path.
