Skydio has announced new wireless and connectivity capabilities after observing the use of its drones in actual applications over the last several months.
Skydio Connect Fusion combines modular point-to-point radio systems with 5G and LTE cellular networks to create a city-wide drone connectivity system built for Drone as First Responder (DFR) operations. It is designed to enable uninterrupted connectivity across varied terrains and environments. Using Fusion, Skydio’s X10 drone can transition to the best connectivity network option available at any point in the mission.
Skydio says Fusion will be implemented in phases with initial capabilities available this autumn. Any Skydio customer with a 5G-enabled X10 in the US who hasn’t yet purchased Skydio Connect 5G will have access to a free trial when it’s released.
The company has also developed Skydio Connect Access Points to provide extended connectivity to the drone on the same point-to-point radio as the controller. It is designed to provide a safe distance buffer for drone operators and can also act to increase network coverage throughout a city or region. Access Points are dedicated radio units that broadcast signals connecting to the X10 and X10D drones. With an ethernet backhaul, Access Points can be connected to local networks, the controller over long wired connections or Starlink for command and control as well as data streaming. Skydio Connect Access Points are currently undergoing testing and the company expects them to be available in early 2025.
