The Association for Unmanned Aviation’s (UAV DACH) competence group for IT safety and security, in cooperation with Germany’s Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), has developed an IT Baseline Protection Profile for the operation of uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) in the “Open” operating category in accordance with the European Drone Regulation. The guidance is also available in English for free download.
“When it comes to IT resilience, drones and their control and monitoring technology are particularly in need of protection,” UAV DACH says. “While corrupted firmware updates, a failure of the communications infrastructure, or manipulated databases are annoying at best on the ground, UAS malfunctions in the air can have serious consequences in the worst case.”
The guideline fits into the established system of IT Baseline Protection profiles from the BSI and provides practical guidance for UAS operators who use drones as a tool for their own business operations. It examines all essential mobile and stationary objects of the UAS that are necessary for flight operations, including maintenance and repair. A reference architecture also illustrates what an operational security concept could look like, encompassing buildings and rooms, computer networks and communications, IT systems, and business processes.
The competence group is already working on an IT baseline protection profile for drone use in the “Specific” category.
