FAA issues Part 91 exemption to Southern Company for BVLOS operations

US utilities provider Southern Company has secured a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) 14 CFR Part 91 exemption for beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) operations using the SwissDrones uncrewed aerial systems (UAS). The exemption was achieved through a strategic partnership with Phoenix Air Unmanned.

BVLOS operations enable Southern Company to monitor infrastructure, quickly assess storm damage and respond to potential issues. The Part 91 exemption means that Southern Company can operate SwissDrones vertical takeoff and landing platforms without requiring a pilot or visual observer to maintain a direct line of sight.
