Australia’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority has approved Origin Energy’s drone programme for Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations, Utility Magazine reports. The approval enables Origin to monitor extensive areas from its Brisbane Remote Operations Centre (ROC), even those thousands of kilometres away.
The utilities provider’s drone-in-a-box technology which enables drones to deploy from and return to self-contained landing stations is included in the approval. These units are already installed at the company’s Darling Downs Power Station in Queensland and Mortlake Power Station in Victoria, with more planned.
Origin uses uncrewed systems for a range of applications, including creating 3D maps and models, conducting thermal inspections and streamlining infrastructure inspections.
