Brazilian post office makes first drone delivery

The Brazilian Post Office made its first delivery by drone on March 26. The first package transported by the state-owned company with a drone throughout Brazil was addressed to Mayor of Curitiba, Eduardo Pimentel.

The delivery is part of a project to create air corridors for drone deliveries. The beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) flight was carried out by Atech, which chose Curitiba for practical tests of the software it is developing for the aerial control of safe drone flights in urban environments, passing over people. In compliance with the regulations of the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC), the delivery was carried out on a route avoiding the flow of people, taking off from Praça Afonso Botelho and flying over the Ligga Arena.

The Post Office and drone manufacturer Speedbird Aero, which supplied its drone for the flight, will contribute information for testing the development of the air control system, focusing on the technical issues of delivery in a city.

According to Atech CEO Rodrigo Persico, the project involves several stages, including approval by regulatory agencies, until the definition of qualified and safe “airways” and routes for drones to perform commercially sustainable operations. “The goal is to study these routes, conduct pilot tests, and develop and improve the software,” he said.
