Jan-Christoph Oetjen, Vice-President of the European Parliament, speaking at Amsterdam Drone Week, urged the European Commission to increase its pressure on European Union States to implement U-space areas.
While some States were moving in this direction, others were not moving at all, he said. There were negative pressures being applied as well as positive ones – in Germany, for example, 55 no-fly zones had already been created.
The danger is that with the delaying the implementation of U-space, monopolies will start to emerge which will stifle competition. There were some positive signs of progress, however, and he applauded Switzerland for reducing U-space service charges “to cents”.
