CASA seeks experienced RPAS inspector

Australia’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) is looking for experienced Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) professionals to join the Regulatory Oversight team as a CASA Inspector (RPAS).

The role performs entry control assessments for certified RPAS operators, technical assessments for regulatory authorisations, provides and coordinates high quality, expert technical and regulatory support and advice, and ongoing oversight of RPAS operations. A proficient understanding of risk-management principles and techniques is required to effectively manage existing and emerging RPAS-related risks and enable technical and regulatory development of RPAS capability within Australia.

“The CASA Inspector (RPAS) works under general direction and will demonstrate and exercise initiative and judgement in providing highly developed technical knowledge and expertise in complex or unusual matters where existing standards, policies and procedures may not cover the circumstances,” the vacancy post states. “These roles require highly developed regulatory knowledge to undertake work of a challenging or complex nature and may include undertaking detailed or sensitive projects that have broader impacts on CASA.”

CASA says the ideal candidate should have strong technical knowledge of certified RPAS operations, including recent relevant experience applying this expertise to large and/or complex RPAS organisations, as well as an in-depth understanding of Australian civil aviation legislation, regulations, policies, and reporting requirements, with proven application in a regulatory environment. In addition, they will have strong analytical and critical thinking abilities to resolve complex, ambiguous issues, supported by effective stakeholder engagement and communication skills, and a demonstrated ability to coordinate and assimilate technical knowledge from a diverse team to develop comprehensive solutions.

They will also need stakeholder management experience, including the ability to engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees and communities in a sensitive, respectful, and equitable manner, ensuring inclusive and culturally aware practices. Demonstrated knowledge of risk management and quality assurance principles is required, particularly in RPAS operations. Recent experience in beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) operations and RePL training is highly regarded, as is experience in project management.
