US Army introduces C-UAS capabilities to basic combat training

Basic combat training at the United States Army’s Fort Sill has introduced counter-uncrewed aerial systems training to better prepare new soldiers for the tactical challenges of modern warfare. Fort Sill is home to the Army’s Joint Counter-small Unmanned Aircraft Systems University.

As part of a field training exercise, recruits will now gain hands-on experience in identifying and responding to drone threats. Capt. Malachi Leece, commander of Alpha Battery, 1st Battalion, 40th Field Artillery said the inclusion of live UAS assets is vital as they are something the trainees will encounter in future conflicts.

“It’s one thing to simulate drone threats, but having live systems in play makes a world of difference,” Leece said. “The trainees are able to experience firsthand the difficulty of tracking and engaging drones, from mini quadcopters to larger systems.”
