Ukrainian drone manufacturer Wild Hornets is thought to be developing an interceptor to take down the Iranian Shahed drones operated by Russia.
The Telegraph first revealed the development on 20 October, with Wild Hornets sharing a link to the article on their socials with the comment “We can neither confirm nor deny this information” followed by a wink emoji and shh emoji.
The Shahed drones have been a major weapon in Russia’s arsenal, particularly when targeting critical infrastructure and other Ukrainian interceptors are in development.
According to The Telegraph, Wild Hornets’ interceptor drone, known as Sting, offers a lower cost alternative to anti-aircraft missiles that Ukrainian forces have been using against the Shaheds. The Sting quadcopter features an AI-enabled targeting system and is reportedly capable of flying at speeds of over 160 km per hour and climbing to an altitude of about 3 km. It is designed to be piloted from the ground by an operator using VR goggles.
