South Korea commissions Cheongwang high-energy laser for military use

The Republic of Korea Armed Forces has commissioned the Cheongwang (Sky Light) high-energy laser (HEL) system for military use. Army Recognition reports that it was officially integrated into active service on October 4 during the KADEX 2024 defence exhibition in South Korea. The system was exhibited by Hanwha Group at the event.

South Korea has become increasingly concerned about Pyongyang’s investments in drone technology and advanced missile systems and initiated the Cheongwang project in 2020 via the national Agency for Defence Development.

The system uses high-energy lasers to detect, track and intercept a variety of aerial targets, including drones, missiles and other airborne threats. It is designed to be effective against multiple targets such as drone swarms and can be used in urban areas as the laser is able to neutralise threats without using explosive force.
