The Government of Punjab has today (March 4) held trials for counter-drone technology that it plans to acquire to counter the movement of narcotics and weapons from across the border with Pakistan.
Local news media Odisha Bytes said several companies participated in the trials organised at Mohali, which were attended by ministers and senior officials of the Punjab Police and Border Security Force (BSF).
The article notes that in the first 10 months of 2024, the BSF intercepted 183 drones that were flying into India from Pakistan, whereas 107 were intercepted during the same period in 2023.
Odisha Bytes quotes a state government official who said the movement by drones of narcotics and weapons from across the border is creating a major law-and-order crisis in the state. Following today’s trial, officials will create a shortlist of technologies and companies of interest, then “negotiations will start with the companies to work out the best deal”.
Unmanned Airspace understands that the systems being tested today included those capable of tracking as well as neutralising rogue drones.
