FI 2024: MBDA’s latest MANPADS under development for Italian Army

MBDA is displaying its new MANPADS (Man Portable Air Defence System) VSHORAD (Very Short Range Air Defence) technology at the Farnborough International Airshow for the first time.

Under development for the Italian Army following an operational requirement expressed last year, and ready to be marketed to export customers, the system is compliant with NATO standards.

The supersonic VSHORAD missile is equipped with a seeker with image processing capabilities. It is designed to target fighters, helicopters and small drones. The system can be integrated either on current (VTLM2 by IDV with Leonardo turret, as displayed on MBDA stand) or future vehicles equipped with automated turrets. Being man-portable, the VSHORAD system is suitable for paratroops and amphibious forces, as well as military vehicles.

MBDA says this VSHORAD system will be integrated with Sky Warden, the company’s modular and scalable counter-drone system.
