The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has reported an explosion at the former Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in Chernobyl. IAEA said the explosion was heard by its on-site team at around 01:50 on February 14.
In a statement, IAEA said the explosion came from the New Safe Confinement which protects the remains of reactor 4. The IAEA on-site team were informed that the explosion was caused by an uncrewed aerial system (UAS) hitting the roof.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has also reported the drone strike on the former NPP via social media while Russia has denied the claims.
On February 12, IAEA had to cancel a scheduled rotation of the team monitoring the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant as a result of intense military activity in the region. And in December, a convoy of vehicles carrying IAEA experts to Zaporizhzhya was the target of a drone attack.
