The UK’s innovation agency Innovate UK is funding an international consortium comprising drone specialists and university researchers to establish a corridor in the Midlands to enable medical and other deliveries via drones beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS). The project aims to exploit drone technology in order to release the capabilities and benefits on supply chains for the National Health Service (NHS) in particular.
Over the next five months, the partnership including specialist drone operators Skyfarer and FlyPulse, Unmanned Traffic Management (UTM) technology provider Altitude Angel, and members of the Coventry University Future Transport and Cities Research Institute will develop, trial and demonstrate BVLOS drone operations. The drone corridor in the Midlands (UK) will connect communities, airports, and medical facilities.
The services are intended to distribute medication, blood, test kits, food, digital devices and other deliveries within a Just-In-Time operational framework with very low infrastructure.
On joining the consortium Richard Ellis, Altitude Angel, Chief Business Officer, said: “We are excited to be working with Skyfarer to establish safe and repeatable BVLOS capabilities integrated with other airspace users. This is the next step in truly scaling drone operations.”
