FAA approves pilot drone food delivery in North Carolina

The Federal Aviation Administration gave approval for partners in the North Carolina Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Integration Pilot Program (IPP) to begin food deliveries by drone in Holly Springs. Drone company Flytrex and Causey Aviation Unmanned can now deliver on-demand food parcels via commercial drones for local residents using a predetermined delivery route. Flytrex recently validated its self-triggered parachute recovery system according to standards set by the FAA and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) following tests by Northeast UAS Airspace Integration Research (NUAIR).

The approval allows Flytrex drones to operate along one predetermined route, connecting a distribution center at Holly Springs Towne Center, a shopping destination owned and operated by Kite Realty Group, with a single delivery point: Ting Park, a nearby outdoor sports and recreation hub. The flight route crosses over Route 55, and flies primarily over unpopulated areas, avoiding flights over adjacent neighbourhoods. CAU Drone Delivery Operations for compensation under this provision will be conducted in accordance with Part 107 Rules and within Line of Sight of the Remote Pilot in Command (RPIC).
