UK National Grid to host 240km BVLOS inspection operation

UK utilities giant National Grid’s overhead line operations unit will be hosting a drone presentation event this week at The National Grid Global Training Centre of Excellence in Eakring, Nottinghamshire. The event will showcase the latest drone technology compatible for use in the overhead line environment as well as robotic equipment capable of installing overhead line fittings.

In a post on LinkedIn, a National Grid specialist engineer said attendees from around the utility industry in the UK and Ireland will be present to see the technology and understand how it can contribute to changing how the networks are managed and maintained to free up valuable overhead line resources for more complex tasks that still require human intervention.

At the event, Boeing backed business sees.ai will be demonstrating its AI-powered inspection technology and BVLOS capabilities. The company will pilot a drone remotely from its office in Chichester, inspecting a National Grid transmission tower in Eakring 240 km away. In addition, DRB srl will be using its drone technology capable of testing the insulation properties of overhead line insulators under live conditions. Other companies exhibiting and demonstrating include FulcrumAir, PLP, Heimdall Power, Nucleom, Ampacimon, Power Line Sentry.
