New Zealand CAA grants BVLOS approval to Ferntech

DJI distributor Ferntech has been granted permission by New Zealand’s Civil Aviation Authority to fly drones beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS).

The company will operate network monitoring flights from Orion New Zealand’s Orion Zone electricity substation in Norwood. The approval enables the drones to be flown from a remote operations centre without the need for a backup pilot on site.

Orion installed the DJI Dock (Drone in a Box) as part of the Norwood substation build last year, and has successfully completed over 250 missions. These flights were used as evidence when demonstrating the technology’s safety and viability to the Civil Aviation Authority.
