Consortium members of the European research project IRINA held a kick-off meeting at Eurocontrol headquarters in Brussels. Involving representatives from diverse aviation stakeholders, including industry, military, civil aviation authorities, and academia, this SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking project aims to achieve the necessary technological advancements for the integration of IFR Military and Civil Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) operations into A to C airspace categories, as well as the accommodation of RPAS operations in D to G airspace categories.
RPAS is a specific type of unmanned aircraft, which is remotely operated by a pilot in a control station. Managing RPAS traffic is challenging for controllers since RPAS fly significantly slower than conventional jet airliners and experience latency in communicating or sometimes loss of communications with the ground.
IRINA SESAR3 project aims to unlock the potential of RPAS applications by enabling their operation in non-segregated air traffic. The objective is to provide recommendations and conclusions for future deployments, regulations, and standards.
The project emphasises infrastructure, services, and detect-and-avoid functionalities as well as the importance of establishing a community network involving various target groups, including ATM, UAS community, military RPAS community, and regulatory bodies.
Project partners: EUROCONTROL, INDRA, SAFRAN ELECTRONICS & DEFENSE (SED), HONEYWELL INTERNATIONAL SRO (HISRO), THALES SIX GTS FRANCE SAS (Thales-SIX), THALES AVS FRANCE SAS (Thales-AVS), ENAIRE, SAAB AKTIEBOLAG (SAAB), DIRECTION DES SERVICES.
