According to a report in UK’s The Sun newspaper, new counter drone technology has yet to be deployed at Dublin airport despite the airport acquiring “the necessary technology several months ago and fire services team fully trained to use it” due to the lack of “final regulatory approval to do so,” according to a statement from airport operator DAA.
In February 2023, Dublin Airport suspended aircraft movements for 30 minutes due to “illegal drone activity in the vicinity of the airport” – the sixth time this occurred in the first two months of the year. The airport, responded with a call for legislation and a new state agency to manage counter drone technology.
According to the report, although the technology had been acquired there were still uncertainties among regulators – the Irish Aviation Authority and the Commission for Communications Regulation – on how the equipment would be used at the airport.
