The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) is holding a hybrid workshop on Specific Operations Risk Assessment (SORA) Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS) regulation in Cologne on 9-10 February 2023.
The SORA workshop: from version 2.0 to 2.5 is open to industry and authorities, to have an overview of the specific operations risk assessment (SORA) methodology. Moreover the new JARUS SORA 2.5 will be soon published for public consultation on the JARUS website (planned by end of 2022). During this event a summary of the changes that will be introduced in SORA 2.5 will be shown. The workshop will also be a unique opportunity to ask questions and provide feedbacks to whom has been directly involved in the development of SORA 2.5.
Thousands of drones operations have been authorised in the last months using SORA, however there are challenges. JARUS, with the support of EASA and EU national aviation authorities, is finalising SORA 2.5 in order to solve several issues and provide clarifications, without changing the basic SORA concepts.
The workshop will go through the main elements of SORA 2.0 and discuss how it will evolve to SORA 2.5. This will help to provide to JARUS informed comments to SORA 2.5.
According to industry comments, SORA 2.5 will bring important changes to the Specific category requirements. For one, the bar to fly over populated areas is proposed to be moved even higher than today. On one hand, quantitative guidance on population densities makes it easier to discuss risks concretely, on the other it may further limit the drone market potential to those with big pockets and slow down innovation.
