Mitsubishi Electric is investigating wind conditions around high-rise city skycrapers in combined research aimed at safe pedestrian movements and the future introduction of drones and flying cars.
A Mitsubishi Doppler LIDAR with an ultrasonic anemometer installed at the Bridge Tower (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) and the adjacent Tokyo Torch Park is measuring and visualising wind conditions (wind speed and direction) in the Marunouchi area (Otemachi, Marunouchi, Yurakucho and Tokiwa-bashi Bridge), since August 2022, according to the JAPAN UAS Industrial Development Association (JUIDA). The radar measures wind conditions within a 1.5 km radius.
In addition to being used to ensure the safety of pedestrians, construction workers, building exterior window cleaners and other workers at high altitudes, the findings are being applied to accelerate the introduction of new technologies such as drones and flying cars.
The effective use of wind condition data is attracting more attention for the acceleration of drone and flying car use, especially in urban areas where skyscrapers stand side by side, as it is difficult to predict the effects of the wind.
Mitsubishi Electric aims to provide the solution service developed based on this demonstration experiment from 2023 onwards.
