Airbus Defence and Space and NTT Docomo, Japan’s largest telecommunications company, have engaged in a collaboration agreement to model, develop and test High Altitude Platform Systems (HAPS) technologies to bring commercial connectivity to all users, for both direct to device and backhaul use cases. According to NTT Docomo Senior Vice President, Takehiro Nakamura, the collaboration provides capabilities to support plans to extend NTT’s 5G and 6G communications coverage over land, sea and air.
NTT Docomo said: ”Airbus HAPS Zephyr has the potential to bridge the connectivity gap, for example by adding connectivity to remote industry, additional capacity to the grid such as disaster recovery or overlay services, and connecting inland fishing fleets.”
