Rome airport authority and air traffic agency sign letter of intent to advance air mobility

Italy’s sole authority for technical regulation, certification, supervision and control in the civil aviation sector, ENAC, has signed a letter of intent with ENAV-Aeroporti di Roma, the management company of the Roma Capitale airport system, consisting of the Fiumicino and Ciampino airports.

The agreement is part of the broader initiative carried out by ENAC called Creation of an Italian ecosystem for Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) – Creation of an Italian ecosystem for Advanced Air Mobility – with the reference institutions and the main players in the sector, for the development of new operational concepts taking into account territorial needs, regulation needs and new technologies for enabling an ecosystem that guides the nation towards the third dimension of mobility, the vertical one, and that allows Italy to play a leading role in the adoption and supply of integrated air mobility products, favouring the growth of an attractive environment for experimentation and enabling of innovative technologies.

The purpose of this agreement is to regulate the methods of collaboration between the parties for the mutual exchange of information, also for the evaluation of any subsequent joint initiatives on the subject, aimed at defining the best regulatory, operational and infrastructural context for the development of Urban Air services. Mobility that are efficient, safe, sustainable and interoperable with airport infrastructures and with public transport infrastructures, with reference to the metropolitan area of ​​Rome and the connections between the two airports of the capital and the city centre.

ENAC says Urban Air Mobility is a technological and operational concept under development concerning the complex of new services, technologies, infrastructures and solutions for the transport of people, goods and supplies, including medical, through the use of electric aircraft, particularly innovative and environmentally sustainable, with vertical take-off and landing routed in air corridors dedicated to their movements, optimizing travel times, reducing consumption and emissions and improving the quality of life.
